Phoenix's Heart by Khelsey Jackson

PLEASE NOTE THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS!

I am really sad to say this, but this book was a big disappointment. It had been on my 'to read list' for quite some time, so i decided to buy it. To be honest i wish i had read the reviews for it first, as many of them seem to have the same view as myself.

For me, the book seemed to take forever to get started and then everything seemed to happen at once.
Jennifer has already met Phoenix by page 2 and sleeps with him by 4 or something. Because the blurb explained that it was about a pregnancy from a one night stand, i did expect her to sleep with him very early on. But again it just all seemed to fast. We barely know anything about Jenny at this point.

The grammar in the book is atrocious. Seriously, it's almost like the author didn't even proof read it herself, and if this has been professionally edited, I would be asking for my money back.
Sometimes the author referred to a 'she' when it should have been a 'he', and some words were just spelt wrong altogether. In truth i can't remember one page that didn't have a grammar issue on it.

Parts of the story were really unbelievable. At times i was getting so annoyed at the cringe worthy romance. Phoenix calling her darling all the time and saying how much she means to him, but then saying he could never love her, then proposing multiple times because he thinks its the right thing to do, and saying he can't live without her.
Also it turns out Phoenix is an incubus (a demon who needs sex to survive, as he feeds off the person he is having sex with), therefore, the babies will grow faster than a normal human pregnancy, so she goes from being 10 weeks pregnant, but measuring at 17 weeks, to being told she will be having the babies in a matter of days. I would like to point out that it states she is still not showing at this time. Then she gets a small bump, then wakes up to having a huge bump, and she is getting ready to go to work like no one is going to notice!
Another thing that confused the hell out of me, is that it clearly states that he used protection but ten weeks later she is pregnant. I know things like that aren't a hundred percent, but i feel like something could have been added in here to make it more understandable. Oh, well also find out that Jennifer's dead mom was a fallen Angel, so Jennifer is half Angel, Phoenix's doctor friend picked up on that, but not Phoenix, which is not explained.
Another thing that just didn't make sense to me was at the beginning of the book Jennifer and Megan's apartment gets broken into and whoever did it also murdered their cat. This never gets mentioned again, then later when you find out about Jennifer's birth mom, it turns out she was murdered by someone but you don't find out anything else.

Jennifer tells her friend Megan what Phoenix is and she acts like it is nothing. But then Jennifer wakes up in the middle of the night to find Megan packing. Megan says she feels evil from Phoenix and can't stay, only to return a few days later and apologize for leaving! Again, confusing.

Then at the end, Jennifer goes to Phoenix's house, after a pregnancy scare, to find his kissing another woman. She says she will stay if he tells her he loves her, which he says he can't as he can't love anyone. Jenny leaves and goes into labor when she gets home, her friend/roommate, phones Phoenix and tells him. Phoenix then realizes he loves Jenny, but says later that he only realized this because her friend Megan shouted at him (what the hell!?) Anyway, Jenny has the babies and forgives him (even though her ex-boyfriend of four years cheated on her and she told Phoenix she couldn't do that again) and they live happily ever after

Overall, i think this book had the potential to be something great. But it just feels like something the author wrote in one night and published. I wouldn't recommend this book.

Two stars at a push

Blurb/Book Description:

Turning her back on a life she can no longer deal with, Clair Davidson has been on the streets for six months wandering aimlessly from town to town. But when a hitchhiked car ride lands her back in a familiar town, and a terrifying encounter puts her in the arms of someone too good to be true, Clair almost starts to feel like she could belong somewhere again. Almost. Alexander Frazier knew what it felt like to live on the streets, up until he received a helping hand from a stranger. After saving Clair from a vicious attack, it’s not long before he realizes she’s a lot like he used to be—lost. Alex soon learns he will risk everything to keep her safe and get her life back on track… even if it means his heart. But fresh starts are new to Clair and not something she’s certain she’s ready for. Clair’s had her share of people walking out of her life and she doesn’t trust her heart in Alex’s hands. Can his love give her the second chance she never saw coming?

Excerpt

Alex walked around and opened Clair’s door, helping her out as she jumped down. He followed her as she walked to the far end of the yard and sat in the grass. Lying back, she looked up toward the black sky. Alex laughed as he looked down at her. “You know, if you’re that
tired, I can get my blanket out of the car for you.”
Clair gave a small smile, tapping the grass beside her with her hand. “I miss it, ya know?”
“Miss what?” he asked, sitting beside her.
“I don’t know, the quietness, the stars. It’s just different. I know, it sounds stupid… it’s just, I’ve been on my own for so long without anyone caring. It’s a little overwhelming having someone care about me now; especially when they hardly know me. Everything Roz has done, I mean, who even does that?”
Alex watched her. She was so animated when she talked. Her face lit up with expressions, her hands waved through the air as if she needed them to help her communicate. Everything was light and easy going until dinner was over. Since the drive home, Clair seemed sad, but Alex let her ramble, venting whatever was bottled up inside her.
“And you,” she said, looking over at Alex, “if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here.” Clair sat up, crossing her legs up under her. “And this date—I mean, this hanging out we did tonight. It was the best night I’ve had since I left home. Thank you for that.” She picked blades of grass with her fingers, tearing them into tiny pieces. “You didn’t have to take me out, but you did it anyway.”
His eyes traveled up her arms to her neck. Her skin looked so fair and soft under the moonlight, it made him want to run his hands over it. “You don’t have to thank me. I wanted to take you out tonight. I’m happy you said yes. It’s been quite some time since I’ve been out on date.” Yes, a date. He didn’t want to just “hang out”; no, he wanted to know everything about her. To hold her hand, touch her skin, and taste her lips. But would she want the same things as he? He still didn’t know.
“Oh, and this,” she said, holding the charm out from around her neck, “you shouldn’t
have bought me this. But I do love it. Thank you.”
Alex leaned forward, taking the charm between his fingers. “I’m glad I saw you looking at it. It looks perfect on you.” He laid the charm down against her chest. Lightly, he traced his fingers up the side of her neck, her hair cupped around her face. Alex stared straight into her eyes, dark under the night’s sky. Her lips parted slightly and Alex could feel her breath quicken on his skin. He wanted nothing more than to feel her lips on his. He slipped his hand further up Clair’s neck and heard her breath catch as if she’d stopped breathing. With his face only inches away from her mouth, he whispered, “If you don’t want me to kiss you right now, you’d better tell me.”

Real by Katy Evans Review

Just a quick warning, this review includes quotes from the book. None will be spoilers though, but there will be swearing.

I think there is only one appropriate way to introduce this book :

Ladies and gentlemen, the noooww... the moment you've all been waiting for, the man you're all here to see. The baddest of the bad, i give you, the one, the only, Remington 'Riptide' Tate!!

It has been a long time since a book has knocked me on my ass, but this one certainly has. I originally picked this up because it sounded like Beautiful Disaster, which is another of my favorites. Real sets itself in almost the same environment as Beautiful Disaster, but that is where the similarities end. Real stands it's own ground.
Brooke had her life planned. She was going to win the Olympics, it's what she had trained her whole life for. But then a knee injury ruins that dream. Which leads her to Remy. Once a professional boxer who has been banned and must now fight in the Underground.
Flames instantly ignite between them. Remy wants her and Brooke tries as hard as she can to deny the fact that she wants him. But then he offers her a job and suddenly he's everywhere

'I think I like him, and i dislike that I do. I think I want him, and I hate that I do.'

Katy has written this book fantastically well, mixing sarcasm, love and anger together to keep you on your toes. Within the first few pages this book had me in stitches.

'Riptide, who's now jumping off the ring and - where the hell are you going?'

Brooke and Remy were intricate interesting characters. They become the soul focus of each others life, desperately wanting more of each other. Remy is from the dark side of the tracks, he doesn't trust people, expects everyone to leave him, because of who he is. Brooke comes from a supporting family, who made her believe she could be whatever she wanted to be. Together, their perfect, but their each others worst enemies also.

'I don't know if I'm bad for him, or him for me. All i know is that this is as inevitable as an incoming tsunami, and I'm just bracing for the swim of my life.'

Remy wants her, only her. He says goodbye to his whores, his protective instincts go on overdrive, he's more than over jealous by any man that even breathes near her. But she doesn't know him, the real him. She see's the fighter the man that always wins. She thinks he's perfect, but he's far from it.

'You'll leave me the second it gets too steep, and you'll leave me with nothing - when i want you like I've never wanted anything in my life. You're all i think about, dream about. I get high and low and it's all about you now, it's not even about me anymore. I can't sleep, can't think, can't concentrate worth shit anymore and it's all because i want to be the fucking 'one' for you and as soon as you realize what I am, all I'll be is a fucking mistake.'

Can he trust Brooke enough to tell her his secret, can she love him enough to stay? Soul's will be broken, hearts will be tested, and there will be only one champion.

'He's not just a star, he's the whole fucking sky to me. He's the sun and every planet in this galaxy.'

An amazing, epic read!! Must read for everyone!!
